New York TRAFFIC Auction - Open call for Domains

August 5th, 2008 by Jay Westerdal

Aftermarket logoWe are pleased to announce the launch of the first phase of Aftermarket.com. This first phase is a dual online & offline auction system using the new platform of DomainTools created specifically for the Aftermarket.com. Many people may be familiar with DomainTools auction platform rolled out last year - we have redesigned most of that system from the ground up. The interface has been improved, not only visually, but technically as well, with simple-to-follow, intuitive wizards implemented to guide users throughout the submission and auction management processes.

The Aftermarket is the first service launched that combines the power, innovation and intelligence of Thought Convergence (TrafficZ, DomainTools, and the Domain Roundtable). In future phases, we will be launching more tools that unlock the value of domains and increase liquidity in the domain aftermarket.

Aftermarket.com’s live auction platform will debut its first live auction on September 24, 2008, at the upcoming T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference in Brooklyn, New York. The Aftermarket.com auction is scheduled for 90 minutes, and we are aiming for approximately 50 to 60 carefully-chosen, well-priced domains. The final lots will be selected by an industry-leading team of experts analyzing each entry to ensure it meets our criteria of a quality domain (or lot), set at a fair and reasonable reserve price. Aftermarket.com will adhere to the DomainTools methodology of publishing in advance the starting reserve, ensuring there is no guessing at what the minimum price will be. We believe competitive pricing will encourage participation from a maximum number of bidders.

Submit your domains now for consideration!

  • August 29, 2008 — Last day to submit domains for review
  • September 17, 2008 — FINAL LIST PUBLIC
  • September 24, 2008 — Aftermarket.com Debut Live Auction!

Go to www.Aftermarket.com to submit your domains now.

UPDATE:

Thanks for the feedback given on the blog, forum and support tickets to the auction submission system. A new version is rolled out. Any data previously input will remain. Below is the list of items:

Verification status issue: Fixed. Verification status maintains.
* updated: in email verification picker, new status messages:
– Pending - select domain and choose email to send for verification
– Contact Support - either domain does not have valid email or verification was denied by user. Support ticket is required to resolve.
– Confirmed - verification complete
* added: If a user denies email verification request, the lot status remains ‘Pending Item Verification.’ The specific domain(s) with corresponding email will have a status to ‘Contact Support’ in the verification picker. This is a security measure to ensure proper ownership of the domain.
* added: If any 1 domain in a lot is set to ‘Pending Item Verification,’ the full lot is set to pending status. This will change the status of the domains in the LOT from ‘Published’ (confirmed verification status) to pending. Each specific domain record does not change. Once the other domain(s) are confirmed verified, all revert back ‘Published’ status.

Sorting: Fixed. Able to sort on Domain, Lot and Lot Status.

Status definitions: Updated. Lot Status and Verification column combined into one status definition under ‘Lot Status.’

Lot Manager: Updated. Easier interface to manage lots - adding and removing domains, changing lot description and title and reserve price.

Please submit a support ticket if you have any troubles.

  1. HBaker Says:

    aftermarket.com, what a fantastic domain!

  2. yofie Says:

Could you explain the Verification process a little better? After submitting my domains, I clicked the Not Verified link on the far right. The system changed to something like verifying.. then later changed back to Not Verified? I also had 2 that said “Pick Email” but trying to click the link did show an error in the lower footer bar and would not allow clicking the Pick Email link.

UPDATE: We appreciate your feedback. Fix was pushed out this evening to resolve the verification issue. If you notice further issues, please submit a support ticket also so we can track it. We are also trying to keep the FAQ current to address questions. Thanks.

  3. realcostdomains Says:

We also get the same error as yofie - you have some bugs to work out in the verification process. Pick email errors us.

UPDATE: Same fix as yofie first entered.

  4. adnetsystems Says:

If you span the row out is says verificationiscurrent, it appears someone chose not to use the space bar when typing. I click on one that says not verified and then see the little circle appear, the all of sudden five or six more pop up with not verified. It is like release a bad game full of bugs, Jay are you sure your ready for this? Maybe you should have called it a beta phase until all the bugs get worked out.

  5. lsudomainsJJ Says:

I get stuck in the auction managaer screen with no chance of verification. I am I missing a button on the screen what gives.

UPDATE: This issue was resolved earlier today. Columns and buttons should appear properly. Thanks for the info on this.

simple-to-follow, intuitive wizards implemented to guide users throughout the submission and auction

OK? where are these intuitive wizards? Jay are going to remain silent until the 29th or are you going to comment before then?

UPDATE: re: your earlier post, the fix was rolled out earlier. That should be resolved for you. If you are not being prompted for data input on wizard, or guide, please let us know. Or if it is a usability issue, that is great feedback as well. Please submit a support ticket with this. We can better track updates for dev team. thanks.

  8. revenuez Says:

Got stucked at http://www.domaintools.com/domain-manager/ with “Loading…” image… Nothing happens and no redirect to any further page…

UPDATE: This “bug” is likely due to temporary internet issues. However, if still hanging & not working for you, please submit a support ticket with your browser version. thanks.

“New York TRAFFIC Auction - Open call for Domains ”

oh the horror, wheres the selectivity, where’s the efficiency, where’s the effort. where the differenceiation? where the “we learned from our mistakes”

just means more of the status quo for sellers submit 2000, get 2

for buyers everythings too high, and what were they thinking when they put these names in

for watches, yawn city and oh my god this is embarrassing for the auctioneer

    page howe

  10. bgitt47 Says:

    No problem posting one name.

  11. adnetsystems Says:

Thank you for responding Jay, I’ll open a ticket if I see any more issues.

  12. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

Do you have an idea of who the audience might be? This way we can try to target domains. I am sure I have a small portfolio compared to others, and with 760 domains, its tough for me to pick only 200 names not knowing who might be eyeballing them. I would imagine it would be similarly as difficult for others with greater portfolio sizes.

Otherwise, I’m gonna just guess and choose 200 top PPC/Visited names. Is that what others are doing?

  13. yofie Says:

Could you advise on the “Not Verified” link to the far right? I have my email address verified, and checked all domains and selected Verify. When I got back in my account, the domains still say Not Verified.

Please explain what the “Not Verified” means. Do I need to do something about it?

  14. Nolte- Says:

For users experiencing problems with verification of your domains:

We are aware of the problem and are working for a speedy resolution. Complete testing of a new release version for the public has begun internally and should be made available within the next day or two. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter as we continue to improve our services.

  15. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

    @Nolte-

Does this extend the deadline? I have been holding off with my 200 submissions, waiting for the software to work (based on these comments here, and not trying it myself). Though, in the past the software was very buggy, at best.

Please let us know when the bugs will be corrected and if the deadline has been extended. No one wishes to lose submissions in the cloud somewhere…

    Thanks!

  16. Nolte- Says:

    @OptimalNamesDOTcom

The deadline is fixed. This auction must go live at the show and there are certain expectations about the number of domains and time requirements of our review process (inherent to the exclusivity of this auction). However, I can assure you & our other guests that entering your domains now and verifying your e-mail addresses will speed the process along. It would be doing yourselves a great disservice to wait. Subsequently, you will be able to “complete” the verification once the aforementioned problems are remedied. If you require added assurances, you may consider dumping your domains to a text file for importing at a later date, or for submission into any subsequent auctions. Thank you for your feedback.

  17. josh51380 Says:

When you submit domains, some say unverified, others say verification is current. So then, when you verify the unverified ones, the page refreshes, and now domains that were verified are now unverified. Umm what?

  18. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

    @Nolte-

Thank you. I shall begin submitting them now.

  19. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

I have added my domains and am stuck. All domains are in “Not Verified” status. I dont see any change to that status, whether I click on the “Not Verified” link, or if I try to check off the domain and choose “Verify Domain” from the dropdown at the bottom of the list.

Nothing I do seems to get these domains verified. They are ALL with the same email address, so it should be as simple as sending one notification for me to receive and acknowledge, no?

    Am I doing something wrong?

  20. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

To add to my post in #19, refreshing the first screen now changes tje status of seemingly random domains to “Pick Email”. When I click on that “Pick Email” link, I see a popup box with my email address and “not sent” next to it - but no way to have it sent, so that I might verify OR no way to choose that email address.

Refresh the screen again and random domains that were “Pick Email” status are now at “Not Verified” again. Back and forth. Page 2 thru 8 are always “Not Verified” and I am going to wait for further advice…

    Anthony

  21. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

Following up on #19 and #20, above, some of my domains are now showing as “VerificationISCurrent”, and that is only the first page. Pages 2-8 of my submissions are not all “VerificationISCurrent”, some are still “Not Verified” and some are “VerificationISCurrent”. I will keep working these domains.

My next question is, how can I set reserve prices. I see a default message next to each domain (ex: “Selling isAir.com for $0USD.” which obviously I do not want to do. I need to place reserves on every domain and I will keep hunting for the place to do this, but until then - does anyone know how?

I think, but cant be sure, that the interface while using Firefox (2.0.16) is not too responsive. If I switch over to IE, then it seems to behave as you are wanting it.

  22. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

I have just submitted a ticket. I dont know if anyone else is experiencing this but if you double-click the reserve to set one for a domain, the status of that -or- random other domains on that page seems to change to another random status.

If you page through your submissions then when you land on that next page your domains’ verification level will be different from the last time you were there - seems to reset or go back to needs verification - when its already been verified.

And, I dont know about anyone else but in the process of verifying domains I have yet to receive ONE email that confirms I am the one who has submitted and wants to place these particular domains into the auction. That scares me a bit in that anyone could find a domain of mine and submit it for me.

UPDATE: I believe these points (and above) are resolved. Please let us know otherwise. Regarding the comment on receiving an email confirmation, your email only needs to be confirmed once. After that, the system verifies it is the same as the one you have on your account already verified (http://www.domaintools.com/verification/) and automatically verifies it.

  23. sofia12 Says:

I don’t see a verification column on the right like others do. Will I just get an email? Or, do I need to do something with this column that isn’t showing up for me?

  24. jrg12345 Says:

what does lot status published mean?

  25. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

    @sofia12:
Check the “Support FAQ” link on the Domain Manager page. They removed the column and consolidated it with Lot Status it seems.

  26. LovelyLA Says:

I found the new submission interface to be very user friendly.

    Hello Jay,

I’m submitting some nice .co.uk domains for live auction,
but it appears that the .co.uk Registry has default setting
    not showing the contact email of the registrants in the Whois data base;
as a result, all of my .co.uk domain submissions are still marked as “Pending Item Verification.”

Is there any other way to have my .co.uk submissions verified?

Thank you in advance for the help!

    Eric…

Have enjoyed your site very much and benefited from the information. Thank You….

  32. RatherQuietFellow Says:

Is there a way to let you folks know about previous offers for a domain name I’ve submitted to the auction? It may make a difference whether you accept the name for auction I imagine. Thanks.

  33. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

    I second “RatherQuietFellow” on #34…

UPDATE: Any information you would like to add for the customer to view can be put in ‘Lot Description.’ This will be visible to all potential buyers to substantiate the value of the domain.

  34. tpn87 Says:

Submitted a domain and the site hiccuped. Now It says the domain is already up for auction, but it isn’t showing in my auction manager.

UPDATE: The entries were not fully submitted creating an orphaned record. These have been cleaned up. The domain(s) can now be re-entered.

  35. cruisesurf Says:

I have the same problem. Three domain names I submitted for auction. It says the domain is already up for auction, but none of those names showing in my auction manager.

UPDATE: The entries were not fully submitted creating an orphaned record. These have been cleaned up. The domain(s) can now be re-entered.

  36. jeanluc Says:

I concur with tpn87 & cruisesurf that the system states the domain name has been submitted but fails to display the same in my account. Furthermore, when I attempt to send an email to you guys the system asks me for my login details even though I am logged in. When I login again the system rejects me, yet the details are exactly as in my account which oddly enough I can access.

You have some serious issues with the system to address and I would appreciate a response..

  37. jeanluc Says:

    continuing on ……

    Kindly advise;

    1. when does/can I expect “Pending Verification” to change to “Published” as I have been waiting since eternity for this to happen ?

    2. do I get an email confirming/acknowledging acceptance of my list of names ? If not, isn’t there a danger for fraud through malicious listing of domain names ?

    Tks.

UPDATE: The issue with orphaned records prohibiting entering domains was resolved. You should be able to enter them now. Re: issue #1 above, they go to published state once the email account on the domain has been verified. You will to confirm email ownership on those. Re: issue #2, confirming ownership requires the submitter to own the email on the whois record. If the submitter does not have access to the email, then it will not be verified and allowed into the auction.

  38. jeanluc Says:

Many tks for the Update. I discovered this afternoon that my Account Manager did not respond to the request for verification emails as it looked like spam emails. Apparently the format of your email was too close to spam emails and did not have the domain name the email was seeking the verification for. Only after my phone call late this afternoon was the verification confirmed.

Yet again I experienced the issue raised in 36 above. Kindly resolve and confirm.

    Thanks.

  39. lotohi Says:

    Hi,

We submitted several domain names on Aug. 11th.

Each time we have logged in since then, the application always takes us back to Step 1 - like we are initially visiting the auction area to submit our names for the very first time. Because there is no apparent link to jump past these ‘name entry steps’, we re-enter the names. As there is no other alternative link presented (except to re-enter our names), after resubmitting, the error message occurs stating that ‘… These have already been submitted’. About the only thing one can do at this point is to Log Out. Have we missed something?

There is no access to the list of sites we have already submitted. Days ago, there was a blanket email sent to all who had already submitted which basically stated that the name list glitches had been addressed. That may be true; however, now we cannot get passed what appears to be the front door which seems to block access to our pre-existing auction related List.

Ticket on this sent 4 days ago (#LRC-843379) - which remains unanswered.

    Hope this helps.

  40. lotohi Says:

As of 17:21 CST, your Support Tech reports by email that they can see our List just fine.

However, we still cannot access our List. After logging into our auction account, the only thing accessible is the 3 step site submission option (see the post above dated 08-29-08 at 08:15 AM for the continuing and yet unresolved problems).

UPDATE: A response was sent to the ticket with details of further troubleshooting for you as it is appears properly on our logins. Please respond to the support ticket.

  41. jeanluc Says:

Been there, experienced all you have gone through lotohi. Unfortunately you just need to follow through with the steps until the point where you enter one of the previously entered domain names. At this point your list will be displayed …….. hopefully … I think a few Hail Marys might help at this stage as well.

At least you are able to send Support emails, I am blocked from doing so even though all my login details are just fine. As such, I am forced to vent my frustrations through this public medium, much to my chagrin. You are also fortunate to have been included in the blanket email - I received nothing …. ever.

Alas, the system is quite disjointed and not particularly user friendly - must have been written after a heavy night of celebration. Let’s hope the auction system is more robust.

Guys/gals @ Support, I’d still like to know what happened to one of my domain names and a prompt response would really be appreciated given that the closing date for submission has passed !!!!

    Waiting in Anticipation …………………

UPDATE: Can you check your spam folder for possible email? One was sent to and did not bounce back. Please email support2008 at domaintools.com with the specific domain in question. This will get funneled into the support system to address.

  42. pses Says:

    trouble getting verification emails to send for these three I submitted;

  43. pses Says:

also, apparently submitted this domain, since it shows as “already submitted” in the tool, but it’s not listed in my acct:

    PortableHeadset.com

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    pses

UPDATE: The post above appears those domains listed are published. We will look into this other domain being held up.

  44. jeanluc Says:

Thanks for your prompt response but my prompt response to your stated email address bounced back stating no such account exists……. and I am still looping (for the last 2 hrs) in the Savings mode after attempting to add several more domain names.

What do I do ? Why am I stuck in the Twilight Zone ?

    Rgds,

UPDATE: Please check your email again for update.

  45. lsudomainsJJ Says:

If the review panel likes an overpriced name will they suggest a list price reduction? This was very common in the last round table auction.

Just wondering. I realize we need to price them accordingly but as you well know many of us tend to cash the checks before they are wrote.

  46. jeanluc Says:

    1. Thanks for the update & the email from Susan.
    2. how is the reserve price determined ? What metrics/modelling is used to arrive at the figure ?

    3. is the auction going to be streamed through your site ?

    4. do buyers get a chance to negotiate with the seller - offline - should the reserve not be met ?

Thanks & I await your response.

  47. propwash Says:

Nuts, I missed deadline by just a few days.

Any chance that a late submission might be considered?

  48. Domaining Says:

I was going to enter my domain AdSpace.com but everyone that has entered their domains into this auction has agreed to this crazy term!!!!! Thats NUTS!!!:

“4. Non-Circumvention. For a period of one (1) year following the termination of this Agreement,
Seller agrees not to solicit or attempt to solicit, negotiate or initiate negotiations, enter into or attempt to enter
into any agreement, transact or attempt to transact, whether directly or indirectly, with any potential purchaser
or purchaser’s agent(s) whose identity was revealed to Seller or Seller’s representative(s) through the efforts of
Company. In the event that Seller breaches this Section, Company shall be entitled to receive its Commission
    from Seller.”

  49. tpn87 Says:

I still have a domain that is hung up in the “domain already listed” orphan record state. The domain is NYpersonals.com. The domain was submitted before the deadline. Can you please correct this?

  50. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

Can someone clarify, in not-so-legal terms, what #48 (”Domaining”) is asking? I am not an attorney, nor do I play one on the Internet.

But, as I understand it, this basically means that in the event a domain name that was accepted into the auction fails to sell to a bidder (for whatever reasons), then we can not turn around and sell that domain name to that bidder *outside* of the venue for a period of up to one year. Otherwise we shall need to pay the commission on the domain to the auctioneer. It does not mean that we can take the domain that didnt sell and go sell it elsewhere after it doesnt sell - even if it had bids on it. Its more of WHOM its sold to, correct?

    Am I correct in that?

  51. Nolte- Says:

    @OptimalNamesDOTcom
    RE: Non-Circumvention

The non-circumvention clause applies only to bidders or entities who were involved in the bidding process for the domain you wish to sell.
If the domain is not sold at the time of the auction, you can not contact participants in the domain’s auction for a period of one year without paying the commission. You can, however, sell the un-sold domain to a person who was NOT involved in the auction without infringing upon this clause.

I’ve already conversed with Domaining at length about this topic and any further “confusion” on his part is simply just an attempt to stoke a fire with our members for his own personal agenda.

If anyone has any further concerns about the domain auction’s legal agreement, feel free to ask our technical support staff. The blog is not an appropriate place for these questions. You will receive a faster response via that medium.

I appreciate everyone’s understanding in this matter.

  52. LovelyLA Says:

    Optimal Names,

It is my understanding that should “the company” have any interested buyers for the “seller”, that those buyers be disclosed to seller.

The “protection period” so to speak protects those names of buyers that were communicated to the “seller” by the “company”.

Any sales procurred due to the efforts of DT are protected for a one year period.

I am not an attorney however, I do deal with a similar clause as I am in Real Estate sales. I too, have a “protection period” with my clients which “protects me” should a sale result from my marketing efforts.

I feel very comfortable with the clause.

  53. adaeze Says:

Is aftermarket.com still accepting submissions for the auction?

  54. OptimalNamesDOTcom Says:

    @Nolte- and
    @LovelyLA

This makes perfect sense to me. I also feel comfortable with it.

  55. jonsy12 Says:

I submitted about 30 domains and only 7 show up in the auction manager, the others ( example: crosscomponent.com) stay in verification but show confirmed. When wanting to resubmit it would show names already added. I dont know what was built here, but seems to me like this system is not working.

  56. LovelyLA Says:

Just curious to those who have submitted….

Has anyone’s status moved beyond the “publish” stage?
If so, have you learned anything further?

    Inquiring minds would like to know. :}

    Thanks.

  57. onlineline Says:

I submitted many names but all my .com and .mobi names are disappeared. Try to relist again but it shows already listed, can’t view any, anyone having same issue?

  58. Dsmb Says:

I tried to submit one of my domains but it says it is already listed for auction, even if I haven’t submit it before. I opened a ticket, but I can’t login to support to see the status of the ticket…
Also, verification button is not working.
    Thanks.

  60. DREAMDEALER Says:

yes any domains i tried to submit said already at auction as well i just gave up :(

  61. macmillan-willson Says:

  62. jece2323 Says:

    Hey mac,
It cannot be submitted by some one else because they don’t own the domain. What do you mean with mismatch?

  63. gofremontave2515 Says:

    Hello: Jay:

I think that I have some generic names with great possibilities. But I also must say that I have come to realize owning a domain is like given birth.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! For instance new mothers tend to think that our babies are the most beautiful children and dream that some day they will become famous, but the reality is quite different.

To that mother her baby is cute, to someone else her child may resemble an extraterrestrial and the chance that child will became famous is slim. Similar with domain names, we tend to think that our names are the greatest.

For instance, I look back at some of my own names I came up early on, and I tell myself, “what I was thinking when registering some of the names? ”

With that said.., and without any intention of offending anyone, since I am also part of that distorted segment.

Can you Guys be my sounding board!
What do you think of the following names? And by the way my reserves are relatively low to bring in bidders,
    Are these Extraterrestrial in diguise?

    LongTermCarewhiz.com

    Ruleof72investments.com

    BargainOfficeSupply.com

    PrestamosDinero.net (to loan money) Spanish

    EcoBoxed.com

    PolloFritos.com (Fried Chicken) Spanish

    AdsBrandNames.com

Thanks, I’ll keep checking to see if my lot progresses beyond published status which is where it is now.

  64. jonsy12 Says:

    @ gofremontave2515

Let me help out on this one. I recomend you go to ” estibot.com ” get it robot apraised.

Hope the evaluation doesnt suprise you to much. I also recomend do some studying on domains, seo, and read some blogs like the conceptualist.com, sevenmile.com, eliotsblog.com

You will then be able to understand what the difference is in some names you have and the ones you probably might never get your hands on.

No bad feelings , your not the only one in this boat.

For most of us domainers we have all learnt the hard way and me beeing in this business for ….. let me think……ahhh….wait a minute….hell i dont remember…..

anyway its been years and if i counted the hours and espresso’s I would probably be able to retire. My hours are in, i have paid my dues, and espresso gets expensive.

But to all in the business, you are the greatest and you have to be a rock and also have the will, i mean be able to swim up the strongest stream of a white water river, able to climb the Mount Denali in Alaska. If your will is that strong, then your made for this business.

If not, you better spend your time some where else.

HELLO: Hey jonsy12, thanks for your thoughts, I checked the sites you suggested. Great sites, the sevenmile.com is one of the best in my opinion. He communicates his ideas without bringing too much attention to himself. Amazing dude!

Did you submit any domains for Sept 24th ?

LovelyLA and I seem to be facing the same situation. My submissions remain on a published status. Well, after checking Monikers’ preliminary list for their next auction Sept 23rd, most of their listings are one-word domains.

I shall see my domains listed someday, I will not give up, I just started to park few of them. Parked.com and Afternic sp?

I must bring to your attention that I read that when there is a pending confirmation on your lot, the whole lot remains pending.
I think I read it on the questions and answers or perhaps on the section where they tell us about the new platform they are now using.

So my advise is that if something is still pending it will not be reviewed because, to them the lot has been confirmed.

I think this is a bug that needs to be worked out. It actually hurts both parties, the Auctioneer and the sellers because some good

    domains may get overlooked.
