Registrant View on Domain Typo Tool

February 14th, 2008 by Jay Westerdal

We have a brand new tool! We just released “Registrant View” on Typo domains. Our current view on the typo tool only showed what typos existed, our new view now shows who owns them rather then having to click through to view the owner’s name and then separately track the results in excel. It literally takes hours to perform that step manually. Our users have been asking for more transparency and easier access to typo reports which don’t require so much manual work.

Here is a screenshot of the tool. You can click on the image below and you will be taken to the search that generated this image.

BofA sure owns a lot of typos. Good to see they’re looking after their brand.

UPDATE BY JAY: Removed the spelling error.

Jay: What an awesome dude you are! In one felt swoop, you just moved both domainers and trademark owners forward 1000 fold. This solves one of the most troubling problems under the UDRP; that is identifying how many other typo domains were registered by a single squatter and including them in a single UDRP. This single step forward will reduce the incentive of blatant trademark typosquatters to register infringing domains. Not only that, my head is spinning with possibilities for outing blatant squatters so that they can be shamed by both the trademark and domainer communities. YOU ROCK!

iphonesucks.com just sold on the aftermarket for $255.00; imo, these kinds of domains are losers (unless one intends to actually build on them–without ads).

or develop them specifically to be non-infringing … ha is the lost opportunity among domainers

  6. MsDomainer Says:

    enrico1999,

How can you make money on iphonesucks.com without infringing?

    iphonesucks lamps?
    iphonesucks music?
    iphonesucks candy?
    iphonesucks porn?
    Title of a book?

If you set up an anti-iphone forum and put ads on it, you’re infringing. And Apple could come after you. Yes, in the US, such a domain falls under freedom of speech, but if you try to make money from it, watch out! From my understanding, even if you LINK to a for-profit site, you could have your domain taken away. And the way the UDRP decisions are going these days, it doesn’t pay to own such domains.

I think there’s a good reason why the domain expired in the first place; as I recall, the previous owner had “family pictures” on the site with a password-protected login. At the time, I was doing some research on “freedom of speech” domains and stumbled upon this site–that definitely gave me pause.

Ya think Apple sent a polite cease and desist letter?

Some UDRP cases have been lost on so-called freedom of speech issues; in any case, a long, drawn out UDRP case could kill the business of a small domainer.

BTW, I have a few “www._____sucks.com” domains, bought (reg price)when I was still new; thank goodness I don’t have too many…

Nope, not a lost opportunity, just a smart business decision (on my part).

I think the new owner has just bought an expensive hot potato.

    Best,

    Ms Domainer

    Jay,

This is a fantastic addition to Typo Generator functionality. To create such a list in the past I had to take the list from Typo Generator and feed it one Domain at a time into WhoIs and then copy and past the Registrant name into an Excel spreadsheet. This is going to be a significant time-saver when conducting investigations.

Now that you have shown me the future, could the same feature be added to “Domain Monitor”? This could be done as either an option in the “View” pull-down list or as a selectable column in “Custom View” or both.

While Domain Typos are a significant portion of Domain Squatting problem, there is another group of squatters who resort to social engineering to identify squatting opportunities. Rather then using mindless robotic attacks, this group does its homework and identifies “opportunities” by data-mining corporate and professional website. Some of the Domain selections are extremely clever and I have to begrudgingly tip my virtual-hat to them. Generally I identify the second group through the Domain Search tool. Lists from Typo Generator and Domain Search are then merged into Domain Monitor portfolios. This is why I would like a “Registrant” option in Domain Monitor.

Uh, newbie here… what are the numbers that are listed?

Also, using iphonesucks.com without infringing is easy, but maybe not practica:

Just create a site and describe what IP Hone is and why it sucks.

    IPHoneSucks.com

Having said that, I used to own and sold iphonefree.org because I didn’t want to own any possible trademarked domains. I can give you a great deal on a number domains that start with e b a y…. seriously cheap!

Great, another to help spammers and phishers steal from us. :(

great upgrade to the tool, thanks Jay and team! would be truly awesome if you could add ‘export to Excel’ functionality :)

Great tool. It is a must try.

[…] DomainTools has improved its domain typo tool. It is now easier to generate possible typo domains for a term together with a list of the owners of those domain names. Fighting typosquatting is a necessary step for this maturing industry to take. For typo domain owners it is getting increasingly difficult to maintain their business practices as there are more typo tools, registrant search tools and other services that help trademark holders with protecting their rights against cybersquatters.
