Free Registrant Search

We are giving away Free Registrant Searches! Well, not exactly all of them, but we are giving away free reports about yourself. In response to some of critics that want to know what is available about themselves we have opened up the report system so that anyone can order a report on their own identify. If you have not used the Registrant Search system yet, it is a system that allows you to see all domains owned by a registrant. We are in the process of improving it even more and adding in features that people are requesting. This is the only system that will be able to tell people where all their domains are located. Have you ever bought a domain from Snapnames or another drop catching place and have no idea which registrar that domain ended up at. After a few months of buying domains you start to lose track of those domains, this tool now allows you to track down those domains for FREE.
We think this is just one step towards a more balanced Registrant Search tool. If people can order a report on you, then you should have the right to know what they can possibly order. Transparency should go both ways.
To access the free report there are a few steps:
1) Be at least a free member of DomainTools.com (Gold or Silver member doesn’t hurt either).
2) Add your email address which appears on your whois record into the new verification system.
3) Order a report using a verified email address as the search string.
4) Enter a payment option (Paypal or Credit Card) to get past the shopping cart; you will NOT be billed.
5) Click purchase report for $0.00.
It is that simple. Presto, you now have a report on yourself. Feel free to order as many reports on yourself as you want. When you order a free credit report on yourself the government only allows one free report per year. We have no limits like this, you can confirm as many email addresses as you like and receive reports on all those email addresses as well.
This is an early Christmas gift to everyone.

It may be an opportunity to see if someone is using our whois info :p
Other than that I now track my domains very well, after loosing some due to Pool strange registrars didn’t send the renewal mail, in a time I was very busy. I learned my lesson.

It still requires you to setup a payment option to checkout.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
I like this idea, but can you explain why we need to set up a payment option to order a free report?
UPDATE BY JAY: Payment option is required because the billing system was not originally designed for free transactions. Just add a credit card or paypal to satisfy the shopping cart and we will never use the payment option.

Nuno! I know you know most of this but ………
The first thing I do when I register a new domain or accept a new client is put the domain into a local html record sheet I keep then put it into a domain tools monitoring account. Right then!!!
Once there’s a parked page (dns resolving for a new domain name) or the site is moved to my servers I make the html domain clickable. I also have the domain tools whois tool in my browser bar.
Every couple days I look though the html list with my browser while watching for the color change indicating I haven’t visited the site recently. I visit the site as needed, hit the whois button and check the dates and make sure the contact info is right.
Hope this helps someone here.

Jay,
Thanks for giving us the whois search on ourselves. I appreciate that greatly.
And Merry Christmas to you and your family.

How about a credit for someone who recently paid for a report on himself that can be used to buy a report on someone else?
UPDATE BY JAY: Sorry, it is only free going forward.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Can we search for multiple emails?
I have used several over the years.
UPDATE BY JAY: Yes, if you still control the email address.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
spambait85738, it is a good suggestion, even in case a registrar messes up.
I never lost a domain though. Now I transfer my domains away from strange registrars we get with Pool and Snap asap, and renew the best ones for many years. I have some renewed until 2013

UPDATE BY JAY: Some registrars will block you within the first 90 days of getting a domain.

I meant I never lost a domain again

When I get an aftermarket domain, I put a transfer request immediately. It sits in my transfer pending folder with the message, “Waiting…” When the 60-day lock is up, PRESTO! I get a reminder email from my desired registrar and transfer instructions.
My question, though: why don’t the aftermarket sellers allow you to choose your own registrar? They stick you with someone who wants to charge fees for everything and wants to collect $25.00 a year to renew a dot-com.
Greed?
After the 60 days are up, I ask them to take the prohibition off, and they do. No one likes a pain in the arse.
And, thanks, Jay; that is a nice gift.

ah ha! a “free” report, “free” address verify “tool” and next you gonna add “jay@westerdal” is associated with 234 email addresses, 3 street addresses, 43 domain names, 14 name servers, 9 hosts, 24 ip addresses, 3 sites, 5 registrars, 2 phone records, 4 fax records, and this report is available for the low price of $$$$$$..
so…..
you better watch out,
what you verify, becuz,
I’m telling you why,
Westerdal is compiling domaineers info to sell.
He sees you when you switch your host,
he knows when you’ve registered a domain idea,
he has a list of your whole portfolio, so,
pay extra for domainzbyprocsee
if you value your privasee don’t u see!
He makes St Patrick green with envy,
the Eastern Bunny like a silly wabbit,
laughing all the way to the bank.
And if you believe that with all the fancy code, he can’t make the shopping cart accept a coupon in lieu of a creditcard, maybe i could interest you in this here bridge for sale…

Not seeing any Christmas gift here.
You were asked to take registrant search down or supposed to add an opt-out feature.
Where is it ?
When will it be available ?
December 14th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Jay - This is a good move to make the search free for yourself.
Thanks for taking the time to address many of the concerns of the domain community with this tool.

Well, on the face of it, it sounds like a cool deal. But once I thought about it, I have to say an emphatic no.
Jay, I’ll give over my CC details and private contact info if I’m buying something from a verified and secure site. But, a big NYETski, on a $0.00 transaction, verified or not. It’s not an issue of trust, it’s just insane to have my stuff sitting on a server somewhere when it really isn’t necessary.
I would suggest you re-program your process, because in Europe you are running afoul of established laws and regs regarding protection of privacy. It would be a drag if DT was blocked for Euro IP addresses. And as myfreethings sez, give us a coupon.
UPDATE BY JAY: Steve, we are working on the issue already, shopping cart items that equal $0.00 will not require a credit card before the end of the year.
December 14th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
That would be nice. I’d like to test this and let my clients know. It’s a good way to have people check things and be aware that they have old email addresses and that their domain(s) is going to expire.
On another note Jay, can you let me know what is the best way to contact you (off-blog)? I have a business idea that would make use of a subset of your “Domain History” information if it would make sense for you to provide it in a slightly different format.

December 15th, 2007 at 10:51 pm
Just ordered a couple of reports, thank you for the early xmas gift!
December 16th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Yes, but you still have to have a Credit Card or Bank account attached to your PayPal account…
December 16th, 2007 at 7:31 pm
After reading all the concerns about having your credit card on file, I think Jay is last guy that will use our information inappropriately. I don’t know him personally but I’ve had my card on file for almost 6 months now because I frequently try to get in the auctions, and my card has never been charged for anything. His information is out in the open and he doesn’t seem to have anything to hide. Keep up the good work Jay.

Does registrantsearch provide free updates to searches you have done in the past? That’s something I’d like to see provided, if possible.
UPDATE BY JAY: That feature is coming soon.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
How much does it cost to get a report on who ordered a report on me?
UPDATE BY JAY: Sorry John, that feature is not available.

Free Registrant search is no use to us as we get the error
“There are 76,672 other records but we only allow users to order reports under 30,000 results. ”

trying to verify an email address on spamgourmet.com (of the form identifier.number.useraccount@spamgourmet.com) repeatedly reported an error.
Anyway, I like the idea of this ‘report on yourself’ idea. Thanks.
