Auction Rules

December 5th, 2007 by Jay Westerdal

Domaintools GavelThe January 3rd Auction is heating up. The domains are starting to come in and there are already some good domains being submitted. A lot of sellers are claiming that a reduction of 20% from the reserve price is not fair if the domain does sell during the auction. It could be imagined that bidders looking for deals will not bid and try to acquire the domain for less after the auction. This is far from the truth, if multiple bidders want the domain it is going to go far higher then the reserve price during the auction. However the unsold domains should be reduced a little to stimulate action. We are going to compromise on this and try and reduce fears by lowering it to a 10% reduction after the auction. Our goal as an auction house is to help owners sell domains. We do a lot of promotion of the domains before the auction and we are selective about what we choose so generally the list of domains that do not sell needs help after the auction.

Post auction unsold domains
A price reduction of 10%. Commission will also go down 10%. We will only charge 9% instead of 10% if the domain is sold below the reserve price. However, It is possible for domains to sell higher then the reserve price post auction if we have multiple people approaching us.

Submission Cut Off Date
Christmas Eve is the cut off date, everyone will wake to the final list of domains being sold on Christmas day. What better way to wake up then to see what domains are under the auction tree.

I would encourage people to submit domains early, it is harder to make the final list at the end then in the beginning.

Please read yesterday’s previous announcement for more rules.

  1. abdu Says:

Do you think generic .cc’s will make it to the auction? I have a few and thought I could list them.

UPDATE BY JAY: Depends on how good they are and how much value there is in them.

  2. abdu Says:

    Solutions.cc and Handsome.cc
    Let me know.

  3. DomainNameNews_com Says:

There’s 2 reasons a name might not sell.
    1. The price isn’t what the market will buy at
    2. The auction didn’t produce the right buyers

If you cut the price, it seems only fair to cut the auctioneer comissions too. So price goes down 10% but so commission is cut as well.

UPDATE BY JAY: Commission will go from 10% to 9%. That is a 10% reduction. Good Idea Adam.

  4. yofie Says:

    I agree with DNN….

Also, is there a place to view the “Agreement”?

BTW Jay, the Submit process is Smooth and Easy!

  5. WillyNilly Says:

    Adam,

Thief….LOLOL…..My idea from previous post….reduce the commission

It’s all good as we are all on the same team.

  6. MsDomainer Says:

    I like the console configuration.

If the email address is the same for several of the domains, does each domain need to be verified?

Also, although these domains are older than 60 days, some of the .cc ones are showing client renewal prohibited or client tranfer prohibited. I haven’t changed info or anything, so what does this mean? That I can’t sell these domains?

I have a lot to learn yet.

    Best,

    Ms Domainer

UPDATE BY JAY: Once you verify any admin email address that verifies all domains attached to that address.

  7. MsDomainer Says:

    A few questions:

Once the domains are verified and confirmed, do I need to do anything else, or just wait for the yea or nay on Christmas?

I kept my reserves low. If you think that they are too low, will you suggest a higher reserve?

I think these are probably in the ballpark, though, but I’ve been checking the past auction lists, and I’m always surprised at what some actually sell for, even when the numbers don’t seem to support their high prices.

BTW, I’ll be in Macedonia during the auction, but I’ll have internet access.

    Best, Ms Domainer

UPDATE BY JAY: You may know before Christmas. A few are going to be accepted early and I will be posting about them and promoting them.

  8. Tiki Says:

I agree, the auction console is really intuitive and easy to use. I’ve submitted 10 names so far with (I think) modest reserves. I’ll wait to see how many are confirmed before making any further submissions.

    = TiKi =

  9. stockdoctor Says:

Wanted to look at the agreement BEFORE submitting names. Am I just blind, or where is the frickin thing Jay?

UPDATE BY JAY: Submit a domain, the next step in the process is reading the agreement.

  10. upthejunction Says:

Bit of an auction virgin here!

Where do I get to see what the auction fees are? Is there a submission fee regardless of whether a domain sells? Or do I get to see all this info after I’ve submitted valid credit card details?

    Kind regards

    John

UPDATE BY JAY: If you have already bought something at our site there is no fee. If you have never bought something we charge your credit card $1 once. Beyond that, there is no submission fee.

  11. gramma Says:

Thanks for the compromise - I really like you guys and wanted this to work for me! I can live with this.

  12. Optimal_Names Says:

Still having issues with creating a lot. For example, I clicked on a domain that I had submitted for consideration “CustomEarphones.com” and the white box with addition information overlays just under the domain name. In that box there is a message “You have no other domains in this lot.” even though I had just added a bulk of 8 names under that domain name by clicking the link “Add to this Lot”, to get them included into the lot.

I see those other eight domain names by they are listed individually - which might be part of the design of this control panel. I am not sure because of the message “You have no other domains in this lot.”

I then tried a different approach. I clicked on InEarPhone.com again and then chose to click on the link “Move this to Lot”. The screen went dark and a box titled “Add this to an existing lot” came up. I keyed in CustomEarphones.com, which is the domain name that I had originally wanted this lot to be created under, and clicked Submit and the screen remained black, the box in the top center is now titled “Attention” and the message says “Cannot move 3425 domains into auction with only slots left”.

I dont own 3425 domains. I only have about 45 domains that I submitted and that includes what I thought were going into two different lots that I have tried to create. So it should be about 20 domains total, with two lots of 8 and 13 respectively.

I dont know whats happening but I cant do a thing with that screen now. I clicked on the Close button and it remains blackened out without any way to do anything else. I had to close the browser and go back in - which it all still looks the same (no domains showing under lots).

Any ideas what’s happening? I will accept “user error” but I have no other way of trying to create a lot. :-)

UPDATE BY JAY: Any issues with the lots should be solved.

  13. alexsimon Says:

Submited about 35 names before seeing the rule about the maximum of 20 domains. I deleted some, but still have bit more than 20, hope that it will not be a problem.

Regarding the 10% fee, it is acceptable.

Is there any rule regarding domain age? I have submitted some newer domains like MyBrowsers.com or BuyIDN.com and BuyIDNs.com .

I hope that the domain age will not be an important criteria. While older domains are more quality ones, it is not a defining criteria.

    Alex

UPDATE BY JAY: One or two more then twenty is not a problem.

  14. upthejunction Says:

    @Jay

Added card details and paid my $1. Completed agreement and yet I’m still seeing “pending agreement” against my submitted domain. Do I just need to wait a while or…?

    Kind regards

  15. MsDomainer Says:

Slightly off topic: Did any of you catch the results of yesterday’s .mobi auction at Sedo? It somewhat applies here because suddenly, .mobi has become HOT, so .mobi domains may be viable submissions here.

Though I’m not sure why the big $$$$, but I’m not complaining.

    ;)

    Ms Domainer

  16. Optimal_Names Says:

In addition to message #12, the lots not working for me, I also have some domain names showing as “Pending Confirmation” but looking on the right side of that screen I see “Pending Confirmation: 0″.

Clicking on the link “Pending Confirmation” in the Status column yields the following message “Before we gather stats or review your domain, you must confirm that you own it. Please go here to confirm your unconfirmed domains.”

I clicked the “here” link and it brings me to another screen (http://www.domaintools.com/verification/) which shows all domains as “confirmed”.

So I dont know what this means as well as the inability to get domains into lots..

    Any ideas?

  17. bigboy1 Says:

How many domains will the final auction list contain? In the neighborhood of 300, 350?

    Thanks

UPDATE BY JAY: It will be a lot smaller then that, I was to get a super good 50.

  18. itsmeyouknow Says:

Jay (or anyone else), as MegaYachts.com apparently sold for $150,000 do you reckon that MegaPlanes.com is worth near on that ?. I have pitched reserve at $20,000 which I think is fair. Please let me know.

UPDATE BY JAY: I have never heard of a Mega Plane. So NO. That is not the way the value of domains works. Just look how many advertisers there are for Mega Yachts. Not one person is trying to sell Mega Planes on Google. Sex.com is worth $10+ Million, so does that make sex9.com worth anything close to that value. NO, even though it is one letter off. Your argument is a slippery slope. If it was a valid argument I would go buy a MegaHotAirBalloon.com for $7 and sell it for $10,000.

  19. jekenterprises Says:

Are we notified if/when our submissions are accepted so we know if they should be removed from other sales channels? Thanks.

  20. septemberlabs Says:

    Dear Sirs,

The domain names I submitted for the Jan 3 auction two days ago no longer appear in my account. Where they once were listed, it reads “You have no matching submissions.”

    The names were:
    * insurancetalk.com
    * taxestalk.com
    * talktaxes.com

Can you tell me what that status is, or at least how I should interpret the fact that they no longer appear in my account?

    Thank you very much,
    Will Smith

  21. mrhit Says:

Jay, are you accepting adult domains?

    Thanks!

    MrHit

UPDATE BY JAY: Yes, we are accepting them but we are not concentrating on them.

  22. mrhit Says:

Jay, I own several good .cc, .md, and .TV domains. Should I submit them as part of my 20? Here are some examples: Camera.cc, Women.cc, College.cc, Cancer.MD, Heart.MD, Anxiety.MD, Hawaii.TV, etc. I am willing to price right, but don’t want to submit if you are only accepting .com, .net, .org, etc. Don’t want to waste my 20 spaces on domains that you are not going to seriously consider. Please advise.

  23. MsDomainer Says:

I received the email asking me to resubmit my domains because they were lost. I did this. Will I need to reconfirm my emails?

    Best, Ms Domainer

  24. xXDanteXx Says:

Jay, I am trying to submit a .co.uk domain but when I go for verification. There is no email address listed in the who is. Can you please look into the issue?

  27. JhonnyBravo Says:

Do the domains need to be registered for more then a specific timeframe before they can be put up for auction, as it was in the last case, I remember reading that every domain should be at least 3 yrs old.

  28. nursemarissa78096 Says:

Does the limit to 20 domains pertain to both auctions? While trying to select generic domains that are specific to at least industry, I am trying to decide on which industries to weight the strongest (-ie. tech, sports, edu, fashion…especially medical names). Do you have any idea regarding which industries may be more heavily represented, or is your guess as good as mine? Thanks. Marissa

  29. prussianz Says:

hi greeting ThANKing My Dear Sir Jay ,

Um… Jay… it seems logical, but actually you’ve just removed the incentive to bid in the auction.

If the domain is guaranteed to become cheaper after the auction if it doesn’t sell, all the on-the-fence bidders are not going to bid at all. They are going to wait for the post-auction action and hope they get lucky. What you’ve done is create a giant poker game. There’s a reason why the big auction houses don’t do this.

    Stay safe… >:-)

  33. Nakul Says:

Is there a way to add some descriptions with the domain names ?

  34. gwh03 Says:

    Hello,

I’ve submitted a few domains but on some the automatic word break detection did not work. Is there a way to specify the word breaks or keywords manually?

    Thanks,

  35. svegi Says:

I have submitted more than 50 domains and confirmed the email address but i didnt find any auction agreement, i dont know where to sign it, no link was found too

    please update on this

    thx

  36. svegi Says:

    got it, thx

  37. databanks Says:

    Same question as 34, and:

I have 16 domains pending review. I tried to add a few more and was able to confirm ownership, but they are adding to my list of domains. I have been trying to add ketonestrips.com and travelpillows.com. What should I do?

  38. mediawizard Says:

I’ve submitted a ton of domains, didn’t know there was ceiling.

I also signed the agreement, twice, but it says ‘pending’

Is there a support system for these kind of stupid questions and problems.

    Any help would be appreciated.

And as a long time user of domaintools and the .sc before that, and never having posted before, I must say the progress on the site has been phenomenal.

    Cheers!

  39. frankcom Says:

    Hi!

Now my 20 names are also submitted and I hope for the auction for some of them :)

Best regards and thanks for the cooperation through the last year

    Frank

  40. zeno Says:

How comes with a CC onfile and when am asked to sign a contract and when i do it says no CC onfile and asked to either rebill or add a new card, I have been charges the $1 fee and I have added the same details for the contract I have with my card but does not recognize me :( what do I do. …..

  41. zeno Says:

Also my domain have been confirmed and I remembered that I signed the same contract when I submitted my card details along with the domains.

  42. zeno Says:

I mean confimed of the domain ownership.

  43. zeno Says:

I still get this error “No credit card payment option on file matches this name. Please go here to add one or make sure that you use the exact name on one of your existing ones. ” Have one onfile ….. copy and pasted the same name incase the spacing was wrong with no success…

  44. Wolftalker Says:

With a lot of people having trouble submitting names, (including myself) maybe the ‘userfriendliness’ of the system could be looked at for future gigs?

  45. rdeal Says:

I have been having the same issues with name not matching credit card. I added an AMEX to my existing on file CC that you withdraw my monthly fees from and still no luck. The contract that I’m trying to sign is dated 1999 and the results have been “pending” since I submitted the domains during the first week. Please get this fixed or at least extend the deadline until you can. Thanks!

  46. dougbo Says:

    Hello,
I’m also experiencing the “No credit card payment option on file matches this name. Please go here to add one or make sure that you use the exact name on one of your existing ones. The card and name are correct. Thanks
