Live Auction Upload Process Ready
July 4th, 2007 by
Jay Westerdal
We are ready to accept domains for the August 15th auction taking place at the Domain Roundtable in Seattle Washington. We have explained how the auction will be run and now we are ready to allow people to submit names. It is easy to add names to your list and then set a reserve. Adjusting the reserves is also easy. Once the names are approved they will be added to the public list. We have a bulk upload tool as well. So submitting thousands of names is easy. But only the top 450 domains will make it to the public event.
A public list of the top 450 domains will appear next week. Until then everyone will have a private list of what domains they have submitted.
The score next to the domain is temporary. So watch it change, it will change as our system learns more about the names.
There is no better place to sell a domain name than at the premier DomainTools auction in front of a room filled with 500 of the top domainers. Large corporations are already scheduled to attend so now is the perfect time to put some names in front of them.
Submit your domains and enjoy the show. Buyer and Sellers that do more then $50,000 in sales will receive free admission to the show. We will credit the Buyers and Sellers back during the closing process. The rules are simple and everyone with great names is encouraged to put some names in the auction.
DISCLAIMER: Everyone that submits domains to the auction will be required to have a DomainTools free account and they will also be required to have a payment option on file with us. We want to avoid the temptation for people to submit domains they do not own. The payment option can either be Credit Card or Paypal. We will not bill the payment option but we will use it to help weed out bad actors. Submitting a domain name that you do not own will be reason for us to ban that you from the Auction and also from DomainTools.

Please clarify the 3-word cutoff rule. I tried to submit tikicraft.com (Tiki Craft = 2 words) but it was rejected because of too many word breaks. Others may encounter the same problem …
July 4th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Concur on the above comment. Attempted to submit biyodizel.com(Turkish for biodiesel) and it gave the same 3 word message.
Also, can someone explain the scoring process?
UPDATE BY JAY: Thanks for the report, we will look into that and fix it.

Would be nice if the remove link worked. I have submitted vodka.com and hotel.com, just to check your scoring system range (otherwise it is hard to understand the meaning of 700 score). But now I can’t remove the domains. The remove link just hides an entry, but all “removed” domains pop up back on a next visit to the page. Take care.
UPDATE BY JAY: Thanks for the bug report. It should be working shortly.

Definite problems with your servers accepting removals and/or modifications to entries. Also, seems after entering about 17 names individually, the 18th and so-on entries would no longer appear on screen (page 2 option never shows) AND when entering the 18th +, it won’t appear even if your would do a sort by score option (yet the message “added / updated” does confirm acceptance)!

People -
There are over 100 million domains.
For example, you heard that 70,000? domains were submitted to Moniker for the past Traffic auction. They had to narrow it down to 4,000?
You know what domains should be of interest.
Why don’t you give them a break and only submit 10 domains?
Maybe, only 5?
If I was Jay, I would make the submitted limit at 5.
I would also monitor the IP address. Because, I’m sure a few will abuse the system.
UPDATE BY JAY: ActNow, we are capable of sorting through thousands of names. And yes, we not only track by IP but we track by account. I think you will be very impressed with how we sort the names. That web page is coming next week.

Hi Jay.
Unsure of the best way to reach you directly, so in order to insure your timely receipt of this important information, am doing so via a “ticket” as well as here via your blog.
I just finished submitting some 25+ domains for the upcoming Domain Roundtable live auction and want to let you know that all of my submitted names carry reserves no greater than equal to or less than the actual written valuations the astute and well-respected folks over at NameMedia/BuyDomains have recently (all in the last 90 days) established for each of them.
I’d be happy to supply these valuations to you, or (since they’re all over 10k; which as you know can only be posted to their BuyDomains site after they’ve independently valued them) you or your staff may simply run them at BuyDomains.com and see the values for yourselves.
Let me know if any further information is needed.
Best regards,
Steve
UPDATE BY JAY: If you are setting your reserve price to the same as your appraisal price then you MAY not get in the auction. We want bidders to bid not to just buy a name at full face value. If you are not submitting names that people want to bid on then it is not an auction. If you know what you want for the name. Just list the price and wait for someone to pay it. HOWEVER, if you lower your reserve to something that gets action, you might be surprised by how many bidders it gets. There is no better test of market value then an auction and what the 500+ bidders are willing to pay for the domain. SO, therefore we are picking through the list and finding all the domains that have reasonable reserves and are very generic. If you fit in the scope we would be glad to have your names in the auction.

Jay,
Is it possible to enhance the listing by capitalizing the starting letter of keywords.
July 7th, 2007 at 7:42 am
Thanks, Jay.
That’s good to hear. Since, as you can see yourself from the very generic, premium English-language, no-hyphens, dotcom only domains I’ve submitted, the 500+ bidders would no doubt be thrilled to have the opportunity to acquire such clearly valuable and useful Internet addresses.
As the fine NameMedia/BuyDomains folks are understandably very conservative in their valuations given their sales model of “let’s get ‘em sold as quick as we can,” I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of these 25+ names actually go out for 2-5x the very modest reserves I have on them…and for the buyers of such solid domains to leave the auction with big smiles on their faces…confident in the knowledge that those domains also were excellent, unquestioned values at the prices they paid.
Looks like my submitted inventory fits right in with the scope that you’re looking for.
Thanks again,
Steve
UPDATE BY JAY: Steve, I am glad we have your domains in our auction. The folks from NameMedia will be there. Perhaps they will buy some of your names.
July 7th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Jay, another thought re the auction:
Note also that all of my inventory is fresh (never before offered) to the live auction marketplace…not tired, overpriced “name retreads” that didn’t sell at other auctions because no one wanted them…
As Frank Schilling candidly explains in one of his posts this morning, “…repetition can cause things to go stale.”…”I almost decided not to attend this auction (Aff Summit) because initially I saw the list of retrys from previous auctions and thought it wasn’t worth attending.”
If there’s one thing bidders surely don’t want to see (and especially all the regulars like Frank), it’s stale inventory.
Nice to know that none of mine are.
Steve

Sounds great, Jay; thank you.
And you make a good point about the NameMedia folks. As one of many who’ve already experienced some nice sales success with their “live sales force, take-domains-to-the-actual-end-users” sales platform; I’d of course welcome them taking advantage of your auction opportunity to make one or more strategic purchases from my submitted inventory.
It’s easy to see where at least a handful of them would position NB to command the on/offline leadership position for a number of specific, high-profit product and service categories.
Looking forward to helping your company join the DNJournal leader board.
Exciting times ahead indeed…
Steve

I appreciate this forum to help domain registrants understand how the live auction will work. Like Steve, I have now submitted a number of generic, English language, non-hyphenated dot-com names that have never been auctioned before. I have one more premium name that I have owned for about 18 months after picking it up on a drop. I’m sure it has been registered for more than 3 years. Can I submit it?
I look forward to meeting you folks at the auction!
TK
UPDATE BY JAY: Yes if you picked it up on the drop it will be allowed in.

Jay, I’m curious; what do the scores mean? Is higher better than lower, or is lower better than higher?
I have submitted four domains, all three years old or older, but I’m not sure how to read the assigned scores.
Also, being new to this game, I just wasn’t sure what to put down for the reserve. If the reserve is too high, would we have an opportunity to change it? Or is that it?
In any case, thanks. No matter what happens with my domains, I’ll be looking at this auction with great interest, and I’m sure I (and other newbies) will learn much from this process.
Best,
Jennifer
UPDATE BY JAY:Scores are not final yet.
If the reserve is too high we will set downward suggestions on the domain and the owner will be allowed to lower the reserve.

Astounded.Com submitted to your auction
686 score woohoo! Is that good?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
I have submitted my domains
why not all of them assigned a score.
July 10th, 2007 at 7:20 am
Just wait. I am sure that all scores will be add

Jay, here’s a riddle and another question:
In April 2006, British Columbia designated an official provincial mammal. In making the announcement, the Premier stated that this animal is a magnificent symbol for the province, embodying BC’s natural environment and the rich culture and heritage of the aboriginal people. What is it? (Hint: not a red fox!)
In May 2003, I registered the dot-net domain name for this same animal. Can I submit it to the auction?
TK
UPDATE BY JAY: Spirit Bear (also known as the Kermode Bear). So you either have SpiritBear.net or KermodeBear.net. You are welcome to submit anything. Our system will figure out the good stuff. If in doubt, submit it.
July 13th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Jay, someone in Ohio registered KermodeBear.net in March 2005. As you suggest, I will submit my dot-net name to the auction and see what happens. It has only been parked with Sedo since the beginning of July (and still needs some keyword optimization) so I don’t have any solid traffic stats yet. I trust that your system will take into account the huge potential of this domain when the site is developed.

Prior to bulk-uploading my names last week, I looked for the guidelines, but I did not find them. I figured that I could always “delete”, but this feature is not working. A total of about 50 of the 1300 names I uploaded are noncompliant with your guidelines, including about 20 sold and 3 misspelled (so I will not be reflected as Owner). No need to respond if you want me to just check back for the “delete” fix. Primarily, I just wanted to relate the reason some of my domains do not comply.
Thank you Jay, for providing an opportunity for those of us who are unable to attend the 2007 Roundtable Conference to still join in the excitement and fun.
Best,
Marissa
