Fox News covers Domain Names

Here is a video of Fox News talking about Buying and Selling domain names. The two reporters seem like they don’t understand domain names but they sure have a lot to say about them. One lady keeps talking about typing domain names into Google. They say there are 90,000 domain names purchased everyday. Hmmm, They didn’t quote their source but it is wrong. Perhaps half that amount or around 45,000 would be more accurate. They seem to think most domains go for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Reporters like these cause bubbles. I don’t want to bash them too much, they are doing a good thing for the Industry but they need to keep things in perspective as well. There is a market for Generic domains that is very healthy. Certain domains are worth millions other domains are worth $6. Crappy domains have no market and never will. They got it right though, there is a lot of money behind dotcom. Everybody knows that brand of website.

It would be great to have a national or syndicated TV news reporter present at the Domain Roundtable Auction. A 30 minute pre-auction primer for the reporter so they understand why a certain domain is valuable would be in order. Then let them loose to film and broadcast the top domain names being purchased. hmmmmm…. what would that do for the values of all our domains? Start the media avalanche, give them something to talk about, but educate them first.

What, exactly, makes a domain valuable? I have a dot-com domain that I bought a few months ago for a memoir I have written (yes, I’m a writer), so I’m not interested in selling it. By all accounts, it should not be worth much (it has a hyphen because I couldn’t get the “pure” version in the dot-com), but it keeps getting hits, more than I would expect for type-ins. Of course, I’m hoping that the book itself will give the domain even more exposure ;=)

UPDATE BY JAY: Easy question, Hard Answer. Valuable domain names all share a few common traits. Traffic is the biggest one. How many people go to the domain name everyday? The more people the more valuable the domain. The second part is, Why are they going to the domain name? If the answer is, they want to buy something. Then the domain name is worth more then if they are going to the website to look at a picture or poem. Travel.comTravel.com is extremely valuable because it would be easy to sell Travel related services there. Is the website easy to remember and is it a common phrase in everyday language? If the answer is yes, well then the domain is worth a lot. However if you invented the domain name or if hardly anyone looks for the Phrase then the website is not so valuable. That is the short answer.

    Hey Jay,

Listening to the two female reporters, you almost inspired me to reg DomainBimbo.com and DomainBimbos.com.

Both are available -but probably not for long! :-)

UPDATE BY JAY: Nope, they are still available as of five minutes ago.
